When to Start Looking

Most apartment complexes and private rentals do not usually know more than one or two months in advance what their availability will look like.  Most rental agreements state that only one to two months notice must be given before a renter moves out, so landlords cannot usually take apartment reservations more than two months in advance, unless they have open units and will hold them for you.

That being said, it's never too early to scope out the places that you might like to live.  A good time to start is in March or April, if you are planning an August or September move in.

Make a list of 20 - 25 properties to visit.  Rule out ones that are too far, too expensive, or ones you just don't like for whatever reason.

You should leave yourself about 8 - 12 properties for final consideration.

Around the middle of July, begin to call these apartment complexes.  See what their availabilities are for August/September.

Once you have secured an open apartment, don't forget to follow through with the requirements for the security deposit, first and last month's rent (if applicable), and necessary credit checks and application fees.
